The City of London - Money and Power 1 of 2 - BBC Documentary , recorded 19.02.2011 Today I watched a Documentary on BBC. Title: The City of London: Money & Power Salient Features Narrated were: 1) London City is Run by and belongs to Bankers and Merchants. 2) It is separated from the Royal Territory by a Pillar with a dragon on it. 3) Even the Queen must ask permission to enter that territory. 4) The Royalty borrow Money for their Rule or Conquests from the Merchants. 5) It is a symbiotic relationship. Merchants need the Royalty to mesmerize the people and keep them hoping. 6) The City runs on Greed, Gambling and Competition. 7) Financial weapons of mass destruction are created, accepted and used. 8) You Come to the City to Live by the sword and die by the sword. 9) If you Lose, there is a door, you can Leave. 10) This is the way it has been for Centuries and will always be. I was perplexed by this Blatant Narration. This is the same pattern copied all over the world after 1945 and the British Colonial Rule. That is why there are many riots - People are rioting against a System they did not think will come into existence over time and by stealth. The City of London is one of the oldest parts of the capitol, as it is located where London was first founded almost 2000 years ago. The City of London roughly constitutes the same area that was mostly unaltered until the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th Century. Known as the "Square Mile", the City nowadays is roughly bounded by the River Thames to the south, Chancery Lane to the west, Charterhouse Street to the north, and the Tower of London to the east. Although the old City's gates are long gone, you can still see their location in the street names. Join us on this video tour as we explore the Tower of London, Leadenhall Market, the City's financial district, St. Paul's Cathedral and more! The Tower of London To the east of the City you'll find the Tower of London by the River Thames. The tower was built in 1066, and the imposing building still reflects its turbulent past. In its long years, the Tower has been a fortress, a state prison, and it was also used as a place of execution. Nowadays, the Tower of London is open for visitors. You can see the crown jewels, royal armor and of course the Tower's famous ravens here. Legend says that if the ravens were ever to leave the Tower, England would fall. Leadenhall Market in the City Leadenhall Market on Gracechurch Street dates back to the 14th century, and is one of the oldest markets in London. Previously a meat, game and poultry market, the covered market was redesigned in 1881 by Sir Horace Jones, who created a beautiful roof structure. This, coupled with the cobbled walkways and beautiful decorations, make it a popular tourist attraction. Nowadays, you can also find clothes shops and more next to the flowers and fresh produce that are still sold here. When walking through the market don't forget to look up: you can still see the hooks on the walls where fresh produce was displayed in Victorian times. London & the River Thames The River Thames passes the City of London to the south and runs through the center of Greater London. The Thames used to play a vital role in London's economy. Although this has changed in modern times, the river is still an essential part of the City. To explore the city in a different way, you can catch one of the riverboat tours that navigate the Thames. From the water you'll be able to see many of London's most famous attractions, such as the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, the London Eye, Big Ben, Westminster Palace and more! The Financial District City of London The City of London is one of the most important financial districts in the world. You will find the offices of more than 500 banks at the Bank of England in the City. Mostly employed in the financial sector, there are over 300 thousand people working within the City's boundaries. As London's foremost financial and legal center, there are many people who visit the City on business. Stay in a City of London Vacation Rental Apartment Whether you're coming to the City of London for business or pleasure, you can relax after a long day and come home to a comfortable vacation rental apartment in the City. (http://www.nyhabitat.com/london-apartment/vacation/city). Or take this comfortable 2-bedroom apartment in the center of the City: http://www.nyhabitat.com/london-apartment/vacation/840, which lies close to St. Paul's Cathedral and several subway stops! Check http://www.nyhabitat.com/london-apartment.html for our entire selection of apartments in London. Pudding Lane, the Great Fire of London & St. Paul's Cathedral The Great Fire of London started right in City of London along Pudding Lane in 1666. Near Pudding Lane you can find the Monument to the Great Fire of London, which was designed by Christopher Wren. The 61-meter-tall monument (200 feet) commemorates the fire that destroyed much of the Old City of London, including St. Paul's Cathedral and over 13 thousand houses. Modern Architecture in the City of London Besides famous landmarks and historic old buildings, the City of London also houses some of London's most innovative contemporary buildings. Examples include the Lloyd's Building, the Heron Tower and the Gherkin Building. The City of London combines all the good of the old with all the innovation of the new. It truly is a place to see! http://www.theoriginaltour.com http://www.visitlondon.com http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London London is the capital and most populous city of England and the United Kingdom. Standing on the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for two millennia, its history going back to its founding by the Romans, who named it Londinium. London's ancient core, the City of London, largely retains its 1.12-square-mile (2.9 km2) medieval boundaries and in 2011 had a resident population of 7,375, making it the smallest city in England. Since at least the 19th century, the term London has also referred to the metropolis developed around this core. The bulk of this conurbation forms the Greater London administrative area (coterminous with the London region), governed by the Mayor of London and the London Assembly. London contains four World Heritage Sites: the Tower of London; Kew Gardens; the site comprising the Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey, and St Margaret's Church; and the historic settlement of Greenwich (in which the Royal Observatory, Greenwich marks the Prime Meridian, 0° longitude, and GMT). Other famous landmarks include Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, Piccadilly Circus, St Paul's Cathedral, Tower Bridge, Trafalgar Square, and The Shard. London is home to numerous museums, galleries, libraries, sporting events and other cultural institutions, including the British Museum, National Gallery, Tate Modern, British Library and 40 West End theatres. The London Underground is the oldest underground railway network in the world. Status Within London, both the City of London and the City of Westminster have city status and both the City of London and the remainder of Greater London are the ceremonial counties. The area of Greater London has incorporated areas that were once part of the historic counties of Middlesex, Kent, Surrey, Essex and Hertfordshire. London's status as the capital of England, and later the United Kingdom, has never been granted or confirmed officially—by statute or in written form. Its position was formed through constitutional convention, making its status as de facto capital a part of the UK's unwritten constitution. The capital of England was moved to London from Winchester as the Palace of Westminster developed in the 12th and 13th centuries to become the permanent location of the royal court, and thus the political capital of the nation. More recently, Greater London has been defined as a region of England and in this context is known as London. Tourism London is a popular centre for tourism, one of its prime industries, employing the equivalent of 350,000 full-time workers in 2003, while annual expenditure by tourists is around £15 billion. London attracts over 14 million international visitors per year, making it Europe's most visited city. London attracts 27 million overnight-stay visitors every year. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tourism_in_London http://www.lonelyplanet.com/england/london http://www.londontown.com http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk

In the heart of London, in the global business district around St Paul’s, dedicated gardeners from the City of London Corporation tend more than 200 micro-parks in just one Square Mile. Many of this Square Mile’s 400,000 daily workers enjoy the flora and fauna through the seasons. Here five of these ‘Secret Gardens’ are introduced by the gardeners themselves. The elected City of London Corporation also runs major open spaces outside the Square Mile, including Hampstead Heath, seven commons around London, Burnham Beeches & Stoke Common and Epping Forest – for everyone in the South East to enjoy free of charge. You asked for it - and you wanted it in high definition! So here it is, another bus ride - this time the No.28 as it passes through the capital's financial heart - the City of London. This time I have included the original audio from the bus ride mixed with some ambient bass guitar music to give you a great journey through the historic City. If you fancy following the journey on a map: We start at Cannon Street at the junction with Bread Street, and head east towards Queen Victoria Street. Passing Bank underground station with the Bank of England building on the left, we head on to Threadneedle Street. The bus continues along Threadneedle Street to Bishopsgate (and the corner of Liverpool Street station) before finishing at the east end of the City at Shoreditch High Street. What is particularly interesting about this 10 minute journey is the sheer amount of building work going - particularly at the eastern end of the City. New shiny towers are being built where old building once stood. There may be a 'credit crunch' but the amount of financial trade that continues to head London's way is not denting the desire of banks and financial institutions to build here. The City's Griffin (a boundary marker at every main road entrance to the City) is all but lost amongst the builder's fencing as we leave. The building works also explain the rather jarring effects from the state of the roads in the City! This episode is in high definition but the bitrate, at 1500kbps, is half the normal bitrate for LLTV episodes so there are some compression 'artifacts' present during the journey.
